Hamid Alvi, born in Karachi in 1951, has spent the majority of his life immersed in the vibrant tapestry of his city. Educated at Karachi University, his art is deeply intertwined with the urban landscapes and atmospheres of Karachi, characterized by the stark contrast between shanty towns and the pale hues of buildings against moody skies. Despite a late introduction to fine arts, Alvi's innate artistic inclination was evident from an early age, preceding his ventures as an entrepreneur and fashion designer. After facing setbacks in business and personal life, Alvi found solace and renewal through painting, initially seeking art as a therapeutic outlet. Under the mentorship of A.Q. Arif, he embarked on his artistic journey in 2006, gradually evolving into a professional artist. His relationship with art transcends mere profession; it is a deeply enriching and uplifting experience, allowing him to authentically capture the essence and colors of his homeland. Supported unwaveringly by his wife, Alvi's artistic endeavors have not only flourished but have also mirrored his personal growth and resilience.
